Weathering Industrial Terrain: Rust, Oil & Grime

Clean terrain looks like a showroom. Weathered terrain looks like a place where things happen — where forklifts scrape corners, pipes sweat, and nobody has repainted a wall since the facility opened. If you play skirmish games on industrial boards, weathering is the single biggest upgrade you can make after basecoating, and it is far more forgiving than most painters expect. This guide walks through rust, oil and grime techniques that work beautifully on 3D printed terrain kits, using nothing more exotic than craft paints, a cheap brush you don't love, and a sponge.
Why Printed Terrain Takes Weathering So Well
FDM-printed terrain has a subtle layered surface texture that mimics rolled steel, corrugated siding and poured concrete surprisingly well. Where a smooth resin model might need texture added before weathering reads properly, printed kits like our Industrial Warehouse Terrain set already have grip for drybrushing and natural channels for washes to settle into. The layer lines that some hobbyists worry about become an asset the moment you sponge rust over them — they read as weather-beaten metal at arm's length, which is where terrain actually lives during a game.
All of our kits ship unpainted, so you're starting from a blank slate. Prime dark — black or a deep red-brown — and industrial pieces are already halfway to looking grim before you open a single weathering paint.
Rust: The Three-Layer Method
Convincing rust is not one colour. Real corrosion has depth: old oxidation underneath, fresh orange rust on top, and bare metal where something recently scraped through. Here's the sequence, beginner-friendly and fast:
Layer 1 — Dark base. Stipple a dark red-brown (burnt umber works) anywhere water would collect: panel bottoms, around bolts, under window sills, along roof seams. Use a torn piece of packing sponge rather than a brush — dab, don't stroke. Irregularity is the goal.
Layer 2 — Fresh rust. Sponge a brighter orange over the middle of your dark patches, covering less area than the first layer. The dark colour should halo the orange. This is the step that makes rust pop from tabletop distance.
Layer 3 — Streaks. Thin the orange with water until it's barely tinted, load a small brush, touch it to the top of a rust patch and pull straight down. Gravity streaks sell the story that this building has stood in the rain for decades. On the tall corrugated walls of a warehouse kit, vertical streaking is doing most of the visual work.
Advanced painters can push further with true chipping: sponge your rust layers on first, apply a chipping medium or plain hairspray, paint the topcoat colour, then chip it back with a stiff brush and water. It's more effort, but on hero pieces — a main gate, a fuel silo — the payoff is genuine painted-steel realism.
Oil and Fuel Stains
Industrial boards need spills. Vehicles leak, drums tip, hydraulic lines fail. The trick to a convincing oil stain is gloss: everything else on a weathered building should be matte, so a slick of gloss black immediately reads as wet.
Mix a drop of gloss varnish into thinned black paint and pool it where machines would sit — loading bays, under parked vehicles, around pump fittings. Feather the edge of each stain with clean water so it fades out rather than ending in a hard ring, then add one or two tiny satellite drips nearby. Real spills are never tidy circles.
For fuel rather than oil, shift the mix toward brown and add a faint rainbow edge if you're feeling ambitious — a whisper-thin glaze of purple and green around the stain's border mimics diesel sheen on concrete.
Grime: The Great Unifier
Grime is the layer that ties a whole table together. Where rust and oil are point effects, grime is atmospheric — the accumulated soot, dust and pollution that settles on every surface in a working district.
The fastest method is an all-over wash: thin dark brown or black-green paint heavily with water plus a drop of dish soap, slop it across the model, then wipe the raised surfaces with a paper towel before it dries. The wash stays in recesses and corners, exactly where dirt accumulates. On a densely detailed set like the UnderNidus Industrial Works refinery and factory set, a single grime wash will find every pipe joint, vent and rivet for you — the sculpted detail does the targeting, you just supply the liquid.
Follow the wash with two refinements. First, a light drybrush of pale grey-tan across upward-facing surfaces replicates dust settling from above. Second, darken the bottom six to ten millimetres of every wall with a soft glaze of black-brown — buildings collect a skirt of splashed-up dirt at ground level, and this one detail makes structures feel planted on the board instead of placed on it.
Keeping a Whole Table Consistent
Weathering across multiple kits stays coherent if you follow one rule: use the same small palette everywhere. One dark rust, one bright rust, one grime wash, one dust drybrush. When the warehouse, the cargo rigs and the refinery all share those four colours, they read as one neighbourhood with one climate — even though they came from different kits. Vary the amount of weathering by location instead: heavy near loading docks and machinery, lighter on office fronts and signage.
Finally, seal everything with matte varnish (mask or re-gloss your oil stains afterwards). Terrain gets handled far more than miniatures do, and an unsealed sponge-weathered finish will wear through mid-campaign.
Start Ugly, Finish Convincing
Weathering rewards boldness. The half-finished middle stage always looks worse than the clean version — push through it, because the final layered result is what makes opponents lean in and ask how you did it. Grab a sponge, thin some brown paint, and give your industrial district the working history it deserves.
