Lighting Your Cyberpunk Board: LEDs & Fiber Optics in Printed Kits

Nothing sells a cyberpunk table like light. You can paint neon signs and glowing windows with the best object-source-lighting technique in the world, but the moment a real LED flickers on inside a building, the whole board changes. Shadows fall the right way, wet-look streets pick up reflections, and every miniature standing under a lit sign suddenly looks like it belongs in a film still. The good news: 3D-printed terrain is one of the easiest terrain types to light, and you don't need an electronics background to do it.

Why Printed Kits Are Perfect for Lighting

Printed terrain kits arrive as hollow, rigid shells, which is exactly what you want for a lighting project. Unlike MDF (which needs light boxes built into the design) or foam (which melts if you look at a soldering iron sideways), a printed PLA or resin building gives you interior space to hide wiring, solid walls that block light bleed, and material you can drill cleanly with a hand drill or rotary tool.

Start Simple: Drop-In Lighting

Before you solder anything, know that the easiest lighting method requires no wiring at all. Battery-powered LED tea lights, puck lights, and cheap string lights (sold as "fairy lights" or "seed lights") can simply be placed inside a building before you set it on the table. If the structure has removable floors or an open underside, you can swap batteries between games in seconds.

This is where buildings designed with access in mind shine. A few drop-in tips:

Diffuse the light. A bare LED reads as a harsh point of light through windows. A layer of baking parchment, thin plasticard, or even white glue painted over the inside of a window softens it into a believable interior glow.

Choose colours deliberately. Warm white reads as residential interiors, cool white as offices and clinics, and saturated magenta, cyan, or green as signage and street tech. Mixing two temperatures on one building looks far more natural than one uniform colour.

Block the bleed. Printed walls are opaque, but light escapes through floor joints and roof seams. A pass of black paint on interior surfaces (before you place lights) kills unwanted glow lines.

Stepping Up: Wired LEDs

When you're ready for permanent installs, pre-wired LEDs make it painless. Buy LEDs sold as "pre-wired 3V" with resistors already attached — they run straight off a coin cell or AA battery box with no math required. Your workflow looks like this:

First, plan before you glue. Decide which windows, signs, and doorways glow while the kit is still in separate parts. It is far easier to drill a wiring channel through an unassembled wall than through a finished building.

Second, drill your runs. A 2–3mm bit through PLA cuts quickly at low speed. Run wires down interior corners where they're invisible through windows, and exit through the base of the building.

Third, hide the power. A small battery box with a switch fits under most building footprints, or you can run leads through a hole in your game mat to a power bank below the table for the full display-board effect.

Fourth, paint after wiring the channels but before final assembly. Prime and paint interior faces black first, exterior colours after, and keep paint out of any channel you still need to thread.

Fiber Optics: Big Signage Payoff

Fiber optic strands are the secret to the classic cyberpunk look: dozens of tiny points of light outlining a sign or dotting an antenna array, all fed by a single hidden LED. Buy end-glow fiber in 0.5mm and 1mm diameters, drill holes a fraction larger than the strand, thread it through, and secure with a drop of super glue. Bundle the loose ends together at a single LED inside the structure, and every strand tip lights at once.

Elevated structures are spectacular candidates for this. Practical Rules for a Gaming Table (Not Just a Display Shelf)

A lit display board and a lit gaming board are different animals. If you actually play on your terrain, follow these rules:

Keep every building independent. One battery per building means no umbilical wires between pieces, so you can still rearrange your table freely for different scenarios and game systems.

Make batteries reachable. If changing a battery requires prying a roof off a glued building, you will stop turning the lights on. Removable floors, magnetized roofs, or under-base compartments solve this.

Light selectively. Three or four glowing structures on a table full of dark ones look dramatic. Twenty glowing structures look like a carnival and wash out the mood. Save full lighting for centrepiece buildings and let painted neon effects carry the rest.
